Fun Friday: Weather Song Explained

The Sound of Sunshine by Michael Franti (2010)

If we take the song title literally, can we really hear sound and music from things we see? The regular person would not.

Our sensory organs are built to only detect a particular external stimulant – optic nerves in our eyes only detect light, taste buds or papillae only detect taste, ear drums only vibrate with sound, etc. Each will have a separate path to our brain. However, people with the condition called synesthesia have a different neural wiring such that information from one sensory organ leads to an automatic stimulation of another sensory system. Listening to guitar music would mean seeing colors coming out of the guitar, and hearing music would mean looking at colors such as the bright yellow sunshine. Incidentally, the word "synesthesia" literally translates to “the union of senses.”
